World Book Day
Did you know that today is world book day? (I sure didn't, but that's why there's a bookslut.) The Independent asked some of the "leading lights of British letters" to choose their favorite character and explain why, in honor of the day. The results are great reading, not only to see which charcaters get chosen, but also to see who chooses whom. This was my favorite entry:
God
Chosen by Michael Marshall (The Lonely Dead)
Polymorphic, unpredictable, unaccountable; omnipotent yet negligent, kind yet vicious. Suitable to any genre or period. Able to hold centre stage in plot, or work subtly in deep background. Never requires a deus ex machina. A character you can immerse yourself in, forever.
