Cool Site o' the Day

Ok, I've already discussed my status as a member of the grammar police, but I must also confess to being an alphabetaphile. I just completely get off on the amazing variety of written languages there are in the world, and the different way those systems are organized. So I was near-orgasmic (too much information?) when I found Omniglot - a guide to written language. This site KICKS ASS. Not only does it give a comprehensive listing of the world's alphabets, but there are pictures so you get a sense for the aesthetic beauty of, say:

  • (Gujarātī)
  • (Loma) or
  • (Georgian - did you even know Georgian had its own alphabet?)
But even cooler, it includes imaginary languages! Check out this phrase in D'ni, which was created for the Myst and Riven games (translation - "Every journey is simply a series of steps but the first step is not always simple."):

There are links to free fonts, histories of each alphabet, and even a place to submit your own invented alphabets. Definitely worth a look.
