Peachy.
So, remember back when that whole pharmacists-not-filling-scrips thing started, and lots of liberal/feminist bloggers were all, well, gee, if you're not going to fill a scrip for Plan B or RU-486, then where do you draw the line? Are you going to refuse to hand out AIDS drugs because you hate Teh Gay? Or painkillers because people should just suck it up? Or cough syrup because alcohol is the froo-it of the dev-ille? With the implication being, of course they'd never do any of those things, it would be absurd and so is their refusal to provide any other prescribed treatment.
Well, let that be just one more lesson that there's no scenario you can make up that's absurd enough not to be embodied by your local nutjob. Because now apparently some pharmacists are refusing to fill any prescription that comes from a clinic where they provide abortions, even if that scrip is for vitamins and antibiotics:
Cedar River Clinics, a women's health and abortion provider with facilities in Renton, Tacoma, and Yakima, filed a complaint with the Washington State Department of Health this week alleging three instances where pharmacists raising moral objections refused to fill prescriptions for Cedar River clients. The complaint includes one incident at the Swedish Medical Center outpatient pharmacy in Seattle. According to the complaint, someone at the Swedish pharmacy said she was "morally unable" to fill a Cedar River patient's prescription for abortion-related antibiotics. [...]
The complaint also includes an incident from November 2005 in Yakima, in which a pharmacist at a Safeway reportedly refused to fill a Cedar River patient's prescription for pregnancy-related vitamins. The pharmacist reportedly asked the customer why she had gone to Cedar River Clinics and then told the patient she "didn't need them if she wasn't pregnant."
So there you have it. And how these assholes aren't getting fired and defrocked or whatever is BEYOND me. (Hat tip Bitch, PhD.)
