More outrage

This hits pretty close to home. The governor of South Dakota has just signed into law four - count 'em, FOUR - of the most restrictive anti-choice bills in the nation. The bills cover everything from parental notification to a "trigger statute" outlawing abortion in the event that Roe v. Wade is overturned, but the most disgusting, in my view, is the first bill:

The first requires doctors to inform women who seek an abortion that they will be terminating the life of “a whole, separate, unique, living human being” with which the woman has “an existing relationship” that is protected by the US Constitution and the laws of South Dakota.

Jesus H. Christ on a crutch. They've just institutionalized falsehood. They're literally requiring doctors to LIE to their patients. "A whole, separate, unique, living human being." In what sense is a 1st or 2nd trimester fetus whole? In what sense is ANY baby "separate" before they cut the umbilical cord? Let's check our terms, shall we? Per Merriam-Webster, whole is defined as "having all its proper parts or components" or "constituting the total sum or undiminished entirety." Yeah, so ... nope and nope. How about separate? "not shared with another; existing by itself; autonomous." Hmm ... no ... no ... and no. And I'm not even going INTO the socio-economic complexities of who gets abortions and why, or how laws like this do nothing to lessen the number of unwanted/unplanned pregnancies. I swear to god, if men had to carry children abortions would be free, legal, and available on every street corner right next to the bagel and newsstand. It's not like it isn't already a difficult decision - let's load on the guilt and add a side of paternalism!! This is one of those days when I seriously consider applying to Canada for asylum status.
