English Or Else

I dunno why I'm suddenly deriving so much Schadenfreude from idiots in India, but, Shiva save me, I am. Apparently, American nativist wackjobs who want to ensure that only English is publicly used aren't the only nativist wackjobs who are obsessed with language. In the Indian state of Karnataka, activists are trying to end the instruction of English. Trouble is, Karnataka is the center of India's massive call-center industry, which is of course utterly reliant on fluent English speakers. Brilliant, and as likely to guarantee prosperity there as English-only laws here in the states.

(Thanks, Carole!)
